Il ordonne à ses vassaux de traquer les fugitifs, partout et sans répit.

Napoleon wuifde dat weg als niet meer dan een smoes, verzonnen uit nationale trots, want de admiraal ging er in de nacht van de 23ste vandoor. Kennelijk snapte Napoleon helemaal niets van het verschil tussen lijzijde en loefzijde, waarmee hij eens te meer zijn monumentale onkunde op nautisch gebied etaleerde"  (p.440)

Legijns en Duitschave's vlaschaards waren de beste vaan de streek; Verschaeve's was nog beter. Verokens te mager. "Dat heeft hij met zijnen chemiek ! spotten de boeren. Maar Veroken liet de spotters begaan. (p.86)

Dit verhaal speelt zich af ten vroegste rond 1870 : pas dan was er een treinverbinding tussen Riga in Letland,dat toen tot Rusland behoorde, en België. Jammer genoeg vermeldt Streuvels niet in welke stad of dorp de "statie" zich bevond, waar het vlaszaad per trein was aangekomen.

 

In de Duitse film, gedraaid in 1942 met Duitse acteurs, komt het vlaszaad niet langer uit Rusland, dat door het Nazi-regime toen als een barbaars land werd bestempeld. Het komt uit de Oekraïne, een gebied waar het Rijk positiever tegenover stond.

 

Chemische meststoffen waren pas vanaf 1860 beschikbaar.
