VICTOR HUGO "Les Misérables", 1862


 


WHERE DID VICTOR HUGO PICK UP HIS STORIES ?

FRAGMENT 1 :

"On se souvient que Cosette était utile aux Thénardier de deux manières, ils se faisaient payer par la mère  et ils se faisaient servir par l'enfant. Cosette leur remplaçait une servante. Cosette était à sa place ordinaire, elle était en haillons, elle avait ses pieds nus dans des sabots et elle tricotait à la lueur du feu des bas de laine destinés aux petit Thénardier. Les deux filles de Thénardier, Eponine et Azelma, ne regardaient pas Cosette. Tout à coup, la Thénardier, s'aperçut que Cosette avait des distractions. Ah ! je t'y prends ! cria-t-elle. C'est comme cela que tu travailles. Je vais te faire travailler à coups de martinet, moi. Les deux petites filles s'arrêtèrent, stupéfaites. Cosette avait osé prendre la poupée ! Cette gueuse, répondit la Thénardier, s'est permis de toucher à la poupée des enfants !"  (p.562, ...)

"Une religieuse meurt. Le médecin de la municipalité vient et dit : il y a une religieuse morte. Le gouvernement envoie une bière. Le lendemain il envoie un corbillard et des croque-morts pour reprendre la bière et la porter au cimetière. Les croque-morts viendront et soulèveront la bière; il n'y aura rien dedans. Mettez-y quelque chose. Un mort ? je n'en ai pas. Non. Quoi donc ? Un vivant. Quel vivant ? Moi, dit Jean Valjean. Vous pourriez venir me clouer dans la bière à deux heures."

See Koran, surah 4, 34 : "Maar zij van wie gij opstandigheid vreest, vermaant haar en vermijdt haar op de rustplaatsen en slaat haar. Maar indien zij u gehoorzaam worden, zoekt dan geen weg om haar te tuchtigen".

TOLKIEN's REMEMBRANCE OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR  :

TOLKIEN READ THE STORY OF SNOWWHITE IN "KINDERMÄRCHEN" by GRIMM : 

"Tools were to be found in plenty that miners and quarriers and builders of old had used; 

and at such work the dwarves were still very skilled..." (p.237)
