Le père Goriot van Balzac, geïnterpreteerd door Thomas Piketty.

Le père Goriot offerde alles op voor zijn dochters, die ieder een bruidsschat van 500.000 frank in de wacht sleepten en zich daarmee verzekerden van een jaarlijkse rente van 25.000 frank, of ongeveer vijftigmaal het gemiddelde inkomen : in Balzacs romans is dat de basiseenheid van vermogen, het symbool van echte rijkdom en een elegante levensstijl.

Balzac beschreef een samenleving waarin het minimale streven erin bestond een inkomen te verwerven dat vijftig keer groter was dan het gemiddelde van toen, zoals de opbrengst van de bruidsschatten  van zijn dochters, Delphine en Anastasie.


Studeren brengt geen zoden aan de dijk.

Wie enkel op een beroepsinkomen kon rekenen had geen enkele kans om die grens te halen, hoeveel hij ook verdiende.


De oude Goriot offerde alles op voor zijn dochters en moest uiteindelijk genoegen nemen met de smerigste kamer en het karigste voedsel van het pension van mevrouw Vauquer. Tot overmaat van ramp hebben zijn schoonzoons heel het geërfde kapitaal verkwist.

Sense and Sensibility



In het Engeland van de 18de eeuw kreeg de oudste zoon de volledige erfenis, het was namelijk de bedoeling om het vermogen van de familie te behouden en te vermijden dat het verkruimelde.

Dit was de oorzaak van het ongeluk van Elinor en Marianne, de heldinnen uit de roman van Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility (1811).

Hun vader laat Norland Park, het landgoed van de familie, rechtstreeks na aan hun halfbroer John Dashwood, die na rijp beraad met zijn vrouw Fanny uiteindelijk beslist om de twee zussen helemaal niets te geven.

Door op aanraden van de onuitstaanbare Fanny te weigeren zijn halfzussen te helpen en een beetje van zijn onmetelijk vermogen met hen te delen, zoals hij zijn vader op zijn sterfbed had beloofd, veroordeelt John Dashwood  zijn halfzussen Elinor en Marianne tot een onbeduidend leven vol vernederingen. (De verloofde van Marianne zal haar laten zitten en hij vindt een kapitaalkrachtige vrouw).

Het lot van de twee halfzussen wordt bezegeld met de ijzingwek-
kende dialoog waar mee de roman begint :



"Mrs.John Daswood (Fanny) did not at all approve of what her husband intended to do for his sisters. To take three thousand pounds from the fortune of their dear little boy, would be impoverishing him to the most dreadful degree. How could he answer it to himself to rob his child, and his only child too, of so a large sum ? And what possible claim could the Miss Dashwoods, who were related to him  only by half blood, which she considered as no relationship at all, have on his generosity to so large an amount ? It was very well known that no affection was ever supposed  to exist  between the children of any man by different marriages. And why was he to ruin himself, and their poor little Harry, by giving away all his money to his half-sisters ? (p.6,7).
