VOLTAIRE, "Candide ou l'optimisme"

VOLTAIRE," CANDIDE OU L'OPTIMISME "     (1759)

Voltaire has an inspiration in the Old Testamentbook GENESIS, 12, 11-16 : 

"...When Abram was approaching Egypt, he said to his wife Sara : 

I know very well that you are a beautyfull woman

, and that when the Egyptians see you, they will say : 

She is his wife. 

Then they will kill me but let you live.

 Tell them that you are my sister, 

so that all may go well with me 

because of 

you and my life may be spared on your account. 

When Abram arrived in Egypt, the Egyptians saw 

that she was indeed very beautyfull. 

And she was taken into Pharaoh's household..."

Exactly the same happened with Voltaire's heros Candide and Cunegonda :

"...On aborda dans Buenos Aires,

 Cunegonde, le capitaine Candide et la vieille allèrent chez le gouverneur don Fernando 'Ibaraa..

.Ce seigneur aimait les femmes à la fureur.

 Cunegonde lui parut ce qu'il  avait jamais vu de plus beau.

 La première chose qu'il fit fut de demander  si elle n'était point la femme du capitaine.

 L'air dont il fit cette question alarma Candide. 

Il n'osa pas dire qu'elle était sa femme, parce qu'en effet elle ne l'était point.

 Il n'osait pas dire que c'était sa soeur, parce qu'elle ne l'était pas non plus. 

Et quoique ce mensonge officieux eût été  autrefois très à la mode chez les anciens...  

Son âme était trop pure pour trahir la vérité. 

Mademoiselle Cunegonde, dit Candide, doit me faire l'honneur de m'épouser et

 nous supplions Votre Excellence de daigner faire notre noce...."

(p.86, 87). 

SIMON SCHAMA "The Story of the Jews"

New English Bible , JOHN 8,28-59

 

 

 

This part of the New Testament is a torrent of abuse between Jesus and the Jews, and according to Simon Schama "the lowest point" in the New Testament :

 

"...The Jews replied : We are Abraham's descendants, we have never been in slavery to any man. Jesus said : I  know that you are descended from Abraham, but you are bent on killing me because my teaching makes no headway with you. The Jews retorted : Abraham is our father. Jesus replied: If you were Abraham's children, you would do as Abraham did. As it is, you are bent on killing me, a man who told you the truth, as I heard it from God. That is not how Abraham acted. You are doing your own father's work. The Jews said : We are not base-born; God is our father, and God alone. Jesus said : If God were your father , you would love me, for God is the source of my being, ond from him I come.

Jesus said : Your father is the devil and you choose to carry out your father's desires He was a murderer  from the beginning and is not rooted in the truth. You are not God's children; that is why you do not listen.

The Jews answered : Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and that you are possessed. I am not possessed, said Jesus. I am honouring my Father, but you dishonour me.

The Jews said : Now we are certain that you are possessed. You are not yet fifty years old. How can you have seen Abraham ? Jesus said : in, very truth I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am.

They picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus was not to be seen. And he left the temple" (JOHN, 8,27-59).

p61, 62 : "...Die desinteresse kwam voor uit hun liefde voor Atatürk en hun seculiere Republikeinse opvattingen, zo verklaarden ze altijd.

Desondanks kochten ook zij, net als de meeste seculiere gegoede families, altijd een schaap voor het Offerfeest en verdeelden ze het vlees onder de armen, precies zoals de bedoeling was.

(...) Abraham kon geen kinderen krijgen. Hij bad tot God : Lieve God, geef me een kind en ik zal alles doen wat u wilt".

Ten slotte werd zijn gebed verhoord en hij kreeg een zoon, Ismael. Ibrahim, Abraham bij de christenen, was de  koning te rijk.

Hij was dol op zijn zoon, hij kuste en knuffelde hem de hele tijd, hij was in de wolken, en dankte God iedere dag.

Op een nacht verscheen God aan hem in een droom : "Nu moet je jouw kind de keel afsnijden en hem aan me offeren", zei hij.


Waarom zei hij dat ?


Moet je luisteren...

Ibrahim deed wat God gezegd had.

Hij trok zijn mes tevoorschijn en stond op het punt zijn zoon de hals door te snijden...



en toen stond daar opeens een schaap.



Waarom dan ?



God had medelijden gekregen met Ibrahim."

Nochtans staat in de bijbel dat het Isaac was die moest worden geofferd.
